Paton Lectures & Colloquia

In 1996 the first Paton Lecture was held. Named in honour of H. J. Paton and made possible by the generosity of his family, these lectures address topics related to Paton’s work, in particular the moral philosophy of Immanuel Kant. The first lecture was delivered by Professor Jerome Schneewind (Johns Hopkins University), and the second, in 1998, was given by Professor Onora O’Neill (Newnham College, Cambridge).

In 2000 the Paton Lecture was replaced by the first Paton Colloquium with Professor Thomas E. Hill, Jr. (North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and Professor Paul Guyer (Pennsylvania) as the principal contributors.

Paton Colloquia are now held biennially under the auspices of the Centre. In 2002 and 2004 the main speakers were Volker Gerhardt (Humboldt, Berlin), Christine Korsgaard (Harvard), Onora O’Neill (Cambridge) and Patrick Riley (Wisconsin).

In 2006 the theme of the colloquium was ‘Kant’s Critique of Practical Reason’ and the main speakers were Barbara Herman (UCLA) and Stephen Engstrom (Pittsburgh).

In 2008 the theme was ‘Moral Knowledge and Virtue’ and the principal speakers were Georg Mohr (University of Bremen) and Ralph Walker (Magdalen College, Oxford).

In 2010 the main speakers were Karl Ameriks (Notre Dame) and Howard Williams (Aberystwyth).

In 2016 the main speakers were Katrin Flikschuh (LSE) and Violetta Waibel (Vienna); commentators: Michael Walschotts (Wester/St Andrews) and Wolfgang Ertl (Keio).
